Founder, Sandals & Beaches Resorts
A visionary like Butch Stewart comes along once in a lifetime. He blazed trails in the hospitality industry, and it all began with one resort and a big dream. Forty years later, he turned that dream into the World’s Only 5-Star Luxury Included® Vacation. Today, there are 20 Sandals and Beaches Resorts on 10 islands across the Caribbean — in Jamaica, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Bahamas, Grenada, Barbados, Curaçao, Turks & Caicos, and Saint Vincent.
He also built what analysts estimate to be a billion dollar, privately-owned Jamaican-based empire that includes 24 Caribbean resorts, Appliance Traders Ltd., and the Jamaica Observer newspaper. All told, Butch Stewart spearheaded two-dozen diverse companies that are collectively Jamaica’s largest private sector group, the country’s biggest foreign exchange earner, and its largest non-government employer.

Sandals & Beaches Resorts
Adam Stewart is Executive Chairman of Sandals and Beaches Resorts, the company founded by his late father, the Hon. Gordon “Butch” Stewart, only the second Chairman in the company’s 40-year history. He assumed the role after working alongside his father for more than two decades, serving as Chief Executive Officer of Sandals Resorts International and, most recently, Deputy Chairman, leading the brand’s transition to its now Luxury Included® signature and overseeing a period of great expansion that also introduced the region’s first over-the-water accommodations and adding resorts in the new destinations of Curaçao and Saint Vincent. His efforts have been recognized by numerous hospitality industry awards including being named the 2015 Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Hotelier of the Year.
Born in 1981, the same year his father Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart purchased his first hotel and launched the Sandals Resorts chain, Stewart was raised in Jamaica and later graduated from the acclaimed Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University in Miami. After graduation, Stewart underwent a fast-track immersion course through the company’s Caribbean-wide resort operations, which today comprises 24 resorts across three brands and ten islands, with plans to expand to more islands in the near future.
Along with his father, Stewart’s leadership has earned the company international acclaim including being named The World Travel Awards’ Leading Luxury All-Inclusive Company for 25 consecutive years, and has resulted in Stewart being personally recognized as the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association’s Hotelier of the Year 2015, World Travel Awards’ Rising Star, Caribbean World’s Travel and Tourism Personality of the Year and receiving the Distinguished Alumni Torch Award from FIU and The Gleaner Company’s Jamaica 50 under 50 Award. In October 2015, Stewart was also named the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s Hotelier of the Year.
An avid adventurer and lover of the sea, Stewart was inspired to share his passion for the Caribbean and launched the region’s premier tour company, Island Routes Caribbean Adventures, offering countless unique and exciting tour and adventure experiences throughout the region. Island Routes has since transformed from a small island outpost to a multiple World Travel-Award-winning company employing 200 people and offering hundreds of adventures in 12 countries.
In addition to his hospitality interests, Stewart is Executive Chairman of the family owned ATL Group comprising the Jamaica Observer, the country’s leading daily newspaper and Appliance Traders Limited a chain of domestic and commercial appliance outlets founded in 1968 and known for its exclusive distributorship of the world’s top electronic brands and ‘unbeatable’ customer service throughout Jamaica. Modernized under the younger Stewart’s leadership, the reenergized company now encompasses a broad spectrum of new sectors with international aspirations while still remaining faithful to the philosophy of service that the senior Stewart created many years ago. In 2018 the company celebrated its 50th anniversary as one of the largest private sector organizations in Jamaica, boasting over 750 employees nationwide.
In 2010, driven by his love for cars, Stewart changed the face of the automotive industry in Jamaica with the rapid expansion of ATL Automotive. With multi-million dollar distributorships and state-of-the-art service centers located in Kingston and Montego Bay, ATL Automotive boasted unrivaled sales and service of the Audi, Volkswagen and Honda brands. ATL Autobahn was formed in 2016 under the ATL Automotive umbrella as the local dealer and regional master dealer for BMW and MINI for the Caribbean region. In 2017, the iconic brand Porsche was launched under ATL Motorsports and the South Korean global superbrand Kia began operations under ATL Tiger Automotive brand in March 2018.
In August 2016, ATL Automotive announced a game changing tri-brand franchise partnership with the world’s largest car rental company, Enterprise Holdings Inc. – the first ever of its kind – that saw the Alamo, National and Enterprise brands represented at four locations throughout Jamaica including prime spots at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay and Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and in each city centre.
Expanding his holdings, in May 2017, Stewart oversaw the introduction of the Starbucks® brand to Jamaica when he partnered with Margaritaville Caribbean Group to form Caribbean Coffee Traders Limited and entered into a licensing agreement with the Starbucks Coffee Company. The agreement granted Stewart’s group the exclusive rights to own and operate Starbucks® stores throughout Jamaica. There are now three Starbucks outlets in Jamaica in Montego Bay, Falmouth and Kingston.
Despite being one of the most prominent young businessmen in the region, Adam Stewart remains a proud Jamaican and citizen of the Caribbean, dedicating much of his time to elevating the islands he calls home. In 2009, he founded the Sandals Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the aim of uniting the region under one common goal: to uplift its people through education and protect its delicate ecosystems. The Sandals Foundation, where he serves as President, harnesses the resources, talents, partnerships and awareness behind the Sandal brand to tackle a myriad of issues affecting the Caribbean. One hundred percent of the monies contributed by the general public to the Sandals Foundation go directly to programs benefiting the region.
In 2013, Stewart was named Ambassador of the Caribbean SickKids Paediatric Cancer and Blood Disorder Project. The not-for-profit collaboration between Canada’s renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and various institutions across six Caribbean islands, works to provide the best possible management for pediatric cancer and to improve outcomes for children affected by cancers and serious blood disorders in the region. Stewart also founded and sits as Chairman of We Care for Cornwall Regional Hospital, a local non-profit organization that brings together Montego Bay-based individuals to raise funds and improve the facilities of the city’s Cornwall Regional Hospital. In 2018, Stewart was honored with the Ambassador for the Poor Award by the Food for the Poor at its 23rd Annual Building Hope Gala for his efforts to help impoverished communities in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
Underlining his reputation as a staunch advocate of education, Stewart established the internationally accredited private sector educational institute, the Sandals Corporate University/ATL Academy of Excellence. Launched in early 2012, the Sandals Corporate University (SCU) pushes the boundaries of distance learning in the Caribbean with over 5,000 team members enrolling in the University to date, and the resorts and companies themselves reaching new levels of excellence. The SCU is the hospitality sector’s first adult education program for Caribbean nationals employed by the Sandals/ATL Group and is underscored by the company’s well-documented training and development of a world-class team; and Stewart’s ambitious leadership in offering guests and clients unprecedented experiences.
In 2016, Stewart received the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) for outstanding contribution to tourism and the hotel industry. The Order of Distinction is a national honor conferred by the Government of Jamaica upon citizens who render outstanding and important services to the country. He was also named the 2016 Caribbean American Mover & Shaker – Humanitarian of the Year from the Caribbean Media Network. In June 2017, the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) honored Stewart with the Jerry Award for his demonstrated passion in the development of the Caribbean region through time, energy, financial and other personal and professional resources.
Stewart recently concluded a three-year stint as 1st Vice President of the Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association and currently chairs the country's Tourism Linkages Council, which seeks to enhance the capacity and competitiveness of local suppliers, making the strength of tourism work for all.
Adam and his wife Jill are proud parents to son Aston and daughters Sloane and Camden.

Gordon “Butch” Stewart, OJ, CD, Hon. LLD
1941-2021
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on July 6, 1941, Butch Stewart grew up along Jamaica’s north coast, a tropical paradise boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, now home to six Sandals Resorts and two Beaches Resorts. But the origin of Stewart’s business career as the leading entrepreneur in the Caribbean had nothing to do with the hotel or resort industries; rather it had everything to do with salesmanship. Stewart proved himself to be a master of the craft.
After rising to the position of sales manager for the renowned Dutch-owned Curacoa Trading Company, Stewart left in 1968 to start Appliance Traders, Ltd. (ATL). Founded as an air-conditioner service and distribution company, ATL soon grew meteorically, adding refrigerators, freezers and other appliances. When the Jamaican government turned socialist in 1970 and demanded a limit on imports, Stewart met what at the time was the greatest challenge to his business savvy and resourcefulness by expanding into manufacturing. Today, ATL makes or sells everything from water pumps and electrical generators to cars and auto parts.
By 1980, the government returned to a more centrist approach to politics and business began to emphasize tourism. The first government-owned, “all-inclusive” resort opened in Ocho Rios and ATL was contracted to supply kitchen appliances and air conditioners. Stewart’s unofficial motto, “We can do better,” kicked into gear and led to his purchase of an old hotel on one of Montego Bay’s largest beaches. Despite no hotel experience, Stewart approached this business with a simple philosophy he articulated many times: “The winning formula is to find out what people want, give it to them and, in doing so, exceed their expectations.”
Seven months and $4 million in renovations later, Sandals Montego Bay opened, the flagship of the most popular award-winning, Luxury Included® resort chain in the world. Stewart never laid claim to starting the all-inclusive concept, couples-only format; he captured the title of “King of All-Inclusives” by continuously innovating and by steadfastly adhering to the “We can do it better” principle of pleasing his guests.
Where other so-called “all-inclusives” offered meals and rooms at a set rate, Sandals Resorts’ prices covered gourmet dining options, premium spirits, gratuities, airport transfers, taxes and all land and watersport activities. The competitions’ meals were buffet-style, so Stewart created the on-property specialty restaurants with high culinary standards and white-glove service. Sandals Resorts also was the first Caribbean hotel to offer Jacuzzis and satellite television service, the first with swim-up pool bars and the first to guarantee that every room is fitted with a king-size bed and a hair dryer.
Mr. Stewart’s innovations changed the face of the all-inclusive format and established both Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts as the most successful brands in the category — and elevating them to a whole new category of all-inclusive. His successes garnered hundreds of personal and industry awards, which have been well-publicized. Perhaps less well-known is the extent of his considerable philanthropy. Under his direction, Sandals and Beaches Resorts give active support to more than 150 major projects in its host communities, through the company’s philanthropic arm, The Sandals Foundation. This support ranges from the building of schools to the paying of teachers, to providing hospitals with linens, to bringing healthcare to the doorsteps of those who cannot afford it.
Maverick. Innovator. Icon. These are all words that aptly describe our late founder. But his love for the Caribbean islands he called home, his family, and making sure his guests had the time of their lives was at the heart of the man. His legacy is indelible and his legend will live on as Sandals continues to dream big and deliver on his promise of creating the next generation of travel.

A Look Back
Our Timeline
Gordon “Butch” Stewart’s Big Idea
What started in 1981 as one hotel in Montego Bay, Jamaica has grown into the Caribbean’s most awarded and well-known all-inclusive resort chains in the world. Sandals Founder, Gordon “Butch” Stewart stood apart by not only offering the all-inclusive concept on the best beaches, but upping the game and including more quality, choices and luxury than any other resorts in the Caribbean. Take a look at our innovation timeline for how Sandals raised the bar year after year.
Sandals
Montego Bay Opens
After Butch Stewart purchased the Bay Roc Hotel in Jamaica, it was in need of renovation, but he wanted to have the resort opened in time for the always-popular winter season. Jamaican-pink Trelawny cut stone was brought in for the entrance, a new lobby and pool were built. Rooms were lavished with king-size beds - an industry first, at the time - and four months and $4 million later, the 133-room Sandals Resort Beach Club - renamed Sandals Montego Bay five years later - opened its doors.
Sandals Invents the
Signature Swim-up
Pool Bar
It was architect Evan Williams who wanted to create something special, something that would be forever associated with Sandals. When he brought up the idea of building a pool with a bar in it, Butch Stewart responded, “Let’s give it a shot.” Williams designed the first lagoon-shaped pool bar at Sandals Montego Bay, with stools built right into the water next to a full-service bar. The guests went wild, and the Swim-up Pool Bar became a standard signature feature at all Sandals (and Beaches) Resorts.
Sandals
carlyle opens
It may be small in size, but from the beginning, Sandals Carlyle was big on charm. With just 52 rooms nestled in a five-acre tropical garden just steps from the beach in Montego Bay, this resort appealed to those looking for an intimate boutique experience. A serene garden retreat at ocean’s edge, Sandals Carlyle was always a guest favorite.
Sandals
royal Caribbean opens
Royal Caribbean Hotel was the next resort purchased by Butch Stewart. After extensive renovations at the main resort and its private offshore island, Sandals Royal Caribbean opened its doors. With its sister resort Sandals Montego Bay located less than a mile away, a unique opportunity presented itself — and the Stay at One Sandals, Play at Two concept was launched.
Upgraded comfort
In the 1980s, amenities like hair dryers in the bathroom, king-size beds and clock radios weren’t the standard for hotels and resorts. It was only after a trip to Europe, where he found a blow dryer in the bathroom, that Butch Stewart understood what “luxury included” meant. All Sandals Resorts were outfitted with these then-luxurious amenities. Over the years, they’ve been upgraded to include high-grade linens, BOSE® docking stations and pillow menus.
Sandals Negril opens
1987 was a banner year for Jamaica, hosting its one-millionth visitor that year. Seeing an opportunity for growth, Butch Stewart spread his wings to Negril, home to the world-famous Seven-Mile Beach. After breaking ground on the best stretch of that beach at the beginning of the following year, Sandals Negril opened in November, with all of the inclusions for which Sandals had already become known. Ten years later, the resort was expanded to include new Honeymoon Villa Suites.
White-glove service with
gourmet meals
At a time when all-inclusive resorts were offering buffet dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sandals was looking to up the standard. The Oleander Room, set on the beachfront veranda at Sandals Montego Bay, became the very first specialty restaurant, serving authentic Jamaican cuisine. Its popularity proved the point, and Sandals revolutionized the all-inclusive dining experience with signature white-glove service and exotic specialty dining.
Sandals ocho rios
opens
Butch Stewart was raised in Ocho Rios, living by the seaside in a home called “Aguazul”. He spent an idyllic childhood on the beach and on the waters, so it seemed only natural to bring Sandals home with him. Sandals Ocho Rios opened its doors on the same beach where the Chairman grew up, with his childhood home folded into the resort. The 237-room resort was a veritable paradise set along the Caribbean Riviera, nestled within a lush, Jamaican garden.
Sandals grande antigua
opens
As Jamaica’s second-largest employer, Sandals was ready to bring its success to Antigua. The island had everything: the perfect climate, a stunning landscape, 365 beaches (one for each day of the year), and a warm and welcoming people. The crescent-shaped beach of Dickenson Bay was known to be one of the Caribbean’s best, and that’s where Sandals made its first home outside of Jamaica. With the opening of Sandals Grande Antigua, Sandals became the largest operator of fully all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean.
Sandals Dunn’s river
opens
Perched on the shores of Ocho Rios, Sandals Dunn’s River joined the Sandals portfolio as the first in Jamaica in 1991. At the time, this groundbreaking property ushered in a new level of luxury, boasting the Caribbean’s largest swimming pool and first pizzeria at a Sandals. It stood as an alluring attraction that garnered rave reviews and affection from around the globe.
First rondovals™
Just as a wedding ring is a symbol of infinite love, Sandals designed their suite-in-the-round to surround guests in eternal love. The first Rondovals made their debut at Sandals Grande Antigua, offering 20-foot conical roofs, luxurious spa-style bathrooms and private patios nestled in a lush tropical garden or opening to the beach. With this new category of suite, Sandals became known for their innovation in luxury accommodations.
Stay at One, Play at Six
Resorts in Jamaica
As Sandals opened more restaurants in Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, it became clear that each resort had its own unique personality. Each resort also offered its own amenities and speciality restaurants, and to give guests even more to do, Sandals extended the Stay at, Play at concept to all six resorts in Jamaica, offering complimentary transfers between resorts.
Sandals adds a golf
course
Sandals added green to its game when they acquired the popular Upton Golf Course in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. After an extensive upgrading of its fairways and greens, the 6,600-yard, par-71 course located seven hundred feet above sea level was renamed Sandals Golf & Country Club. Guests at nearby Sandals Resorts got another fantastic land sport and it was included with their vacation.
New Loft suites created
Ever the innovators, Sandals created a whole new category of suites at Sandals Negril. The addition of these two-story suites raised the bar on luxury in the Caribbean, with spacious accommodations that put the bedroom above the open concept living space below. What’s more, these suites were closer to the water’s edge than any other accommodations at Sandals.
Introducing the ultra
all-inclusive vacation
It wasn’t enough to be an all-inclusive resort because Sandals had, from its beginnings, been offering guests more inclusions than any other resorts in the Caribbean. And to let guests know what to expect, Sandals introduced the Ultra All-Inclusive Vacation, offering more gourmet dining options, premium accommodations, an expansive variety of land and water sports, an extraordinary staff and unparalleled service.
Sandals regency la toc
opens
With its iconic Pitons looming over impossibly blue waters, Saint Lucia seemed a natural fit for the Sandals family. The former La Toc estate, once considered the most glamorous resort in the Caribbean, was acquired and renovated. With its opening, the 272-room resort set on 155 acres of lush, rolling hills, offered guests a nine-hole golf course and a perfect, crescent-shaped beach. A $15 million expansion in 1999 added The Villas on Sunset Bluff including 56 luxurious suites, a restaurant and a cliff-side pool with a swim-up bar.
Plunge pools added
to suites
Sandals added another level of luxury at Sandals Regency La Toc. Butch Stewart’s “innovation not imitation” philosophy was extended to The Villas on Sunset Bluff, where luxurious one- and two-story accommodations were built with private plunge pools set 50 feet above the Caribbean Sea, giving guests endless romance, unparalleled luxury and spectacular views.
Island-hopping
is introduced
With more Sandals resorts being added to the Caribbean, the company launched its Island-Hopping program, letting guests experience more Sandals Resorts in one vacation. Sandals advisors helped guests tailor-make their own itineraries, letting them hop to another resort or another island for a day, a weekend, or even the week. They could even change their room categories. It was just another way to give couples more ways to experience Sandals and the Caribbean.
Sandals halcyon beach
opens
Saint Lucia’s extraordinary beauty inspired Sandals to build a second resort just a ten-minute drive from Sandals Regency La Toc. With its lush gardens lining a picture-perfect shoreline, this veritable Garden of Eden was named Sandals Halcyon Beach Resort, offering guests 170 rooms and access to all the amenities - including the nine-hole golf course - at Sandals Regency La Toc, launching the Stay at One, Play at Two exchange program in Saint Lucia.
First over-the-water
restaurant
With its low-key, laid-back atmosphere, postcard-perfect setting on the sea, and calm waters, Sandals built its first over-the-water restaurant at Sandals Halcyon Beach. The Pier Restaurant, as it was called when it opened, offered gourmet Caribbean cuisine on its own pier extending 150-feet out over the sea. Today, Kelly’s Dockside offers a fusion of seafood favorites and Saint Lucia’s delectable Creole cookery, all served up with a view of Saint Lucia’s fiery sunsets and lush volcanic mountains.
Named World’s leading
all-inclusive and top
Caribbean hotel group
By the mid-1990s, Sandals had earned the trust and respect of travel agents, offering a superior all-inclusive product, an exceptional guest experience and more ways for travel advisors to earn more commission. This love affair was taken to a whole new level at the first annual World Travel Awards, when travel advisors in over 50 countries cast their vote and named Sandals the World’s Leading All-Inclusive and Top Caribbean Hotel Group — distinctions Sandals has held every year since.
A new ambassador for
sandals
Sandals biggest ambassador joined the company in 1995, and she was a beauty. Lady Sandals, as she was so aptly named, is a 138-foot yacht that was always meant to be more than a pleasure cruiser. Since her launch, Lady Sandals sailed from port to port, serving as a floating classroom used to educate our travel partners about all things Sandals - with Sandals usual style and panache.
Sandals royal
Bahamian & offshore
island opens
When the opportunity arose to expand its horizons to The Bahamas, Sandals grabbed it. After purchasing the former Balmoral Club, once the winter playground for royalty and celebrities alike, Sandals spent the next year renovating it, spending $150 million to add an additional 210 luxury rooms and oceanfront suites, two gourmet restaurants (for a total of six), an 8,900-square foot swimming pool, the company’s first world-class European-style spa, and a 25-acre offshore island.
First pub opens
While Sandals Royal Bahamian was undergoing its extension renovation, Butch Stewart was in England, where he found himself sitting in a pub. It was there he decided that, with its British sensibilities, Sandals Royal Bahamian needed a British Pub. Antique pub fixtures and furnishings were purchased and shipped from all over the United Kingdom, and reassembled at the resort. With its menu of traditional British fare and ales, Cricketer’s is as authentic as any pub found in the British Isles.
First Teppanyaki
Restaurant
It was a novel concept for an all-inclusive: a restaurant where the chefs prepared the meal right at the table. But Kimonos was perfect for the brand, combining the best of Sandals by offering extraordinary cuisine and unlimited entertainment. Chefs don't just prepare the meal; they make the meal a show. Guests sit around the teppanyaki table while chefs slice, dice, saute, stir fry, and flambe every menu selection. Today, Kimonos is found at ten Sandals and two Beaches® Resorts.
Beaches Negril Opens
It all began when guests started telling Butch Stewart how much they loved Sandals. 'But we have families now,' they added. "What do we do with our kids while we're away?" With that, Beaches Resorts was born, offering families, singles, and couples an all-inclusive vacation. Beaches Negril in Jamaica was the brand's first build, a 225-room resort on the famed Seven-Mile Beach that incorporated environmental values into every aspect. Later he added an 18,000-sq.-ft. pirate-themed waterpark with waterslides and a lazy river.
Beaches Turks & Caicos
Opens
Just months after the opening of its first resort, Beaches opened the doors to Beaches Turks & Caicos in Providenciales. The resort offered something for everyone, an activity center for youngsters, a state-of-the-art Sega Center for gamers, and a European-style spa. Set in a destination known for its incredible reefs and walls, a first-class dive operation was also offered. The 225-room resort was expanded over the years, and now boasts five unique villages, each infused with its own personality and amenities.
First Café de Paris
Beaches Turks & Caicos was the first Sandals or Beaches Resort to offer an authentic French-style patisserie. Café de Paris served sweet treats just like you'd expect to find in Paris, along with specialty coffee and tea. With bistro seating, guests could sit down and enjoy freshly made éclairs, tartlettes, macaroons, meringues, cake, and pastry puffs at their table, or take them back to the pool or to their suite.
Green Globe Distinction
From its beginning, Sandals ran its resorts with an eye for protecting the environment. Sandals Negril was only the fifth resort in the world - and the very first all-inclusive resort - to become Green Globe Certified. Within three years, all 15 Sandals and Beaches Resorts earned that designation, demonstrating the exacting standards Sandals took when it came not just to guest services, but to their responsibility to the environment. And in 2008, Sandals Negril became the first resort in the world to earn the Green Globe Platinum Certification.
Pirates Island
Waterpark Opens at
Beaches Turks & Caicos
After a $4 million investment, Beaches Turks & Caicos opened the state-of-the-art Pirates Island Waterpark and kid's center. This entertainment complex was the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience for kids, with exhilarating waterslides, a kiddie pool with swim-up kid's bar, a 50s diner, game room, and Sega Center. Over the years, the waterpark would be expanded with a 650-foot lazy river, the Caribbean's first SurfStream® Surf Simulator, and even a 42-foot SkySlide.
Sandals Select Loyalty
Program Launched
Recognizing the loyalty of guests who return to Sandals time after time, Sandals created a loyalty reward program—Sandals Select. From their very first stay, guests have access to unique privileges like in-room welcome packages and treats, members-only events, spa services, in-room check-in and, of course, the ability to earn points toward free stays.
First Soy Sushi Bar Opens
Sandals expanded its culinary horizons once again with the addition of its very first sushi restaurant. Soy Sushi Bar opened at Sandals Ocho Rios in Jamaica, serving guests the freshest sushi, created by authentic sushi chefs, just steps from the seaside.
Beaches Ocho Rios Opens
With even more demand for all-inclusive family vacations, Beaches opened its third resort, Beaches Boscobel Resort & Golf Club. An $18 million expansion and refurbishment created the perfect family resort featuring an Xbox Game Oasis Game Garage, complimentary golf for everyone - including kids - a luxury European-style spa, and five restaurants. Five years and $3 million later, the 27,000-square-foot Pirates Island Waterpark opened with 10 new waterslides. In 2012, after a multimillion dollar renovation, Beaches Boscobel became Beaches Ocho Rios Resort & Golf Club.
Sandals Grande
St. Lucian Opens
Sandals opened its third resort on Saint Lucia with the addition of Sandals Grande St. Lucian on the calm waters of Rodney Bay. After a $10 million renovation, this Five Star Diamond property situated on a 17-acre peninsula, let guests Stay at One, Play at Three Sandals resorts on the island. With 284 rooms offering breathtaking ocean views, the resort offered Sandals signature RondovalTM suites-in-the-round with private plunge pools, just steps from the beach, and an over-the-water restaurant serving the finest cuisine.
Relax: That's an Order!
To thank and show support for the U.S. Armed Forces, Butch Stewart launched OPERATION RELAX, granting millions of dollars in complimentary vacations to Sandals and Beaches to active duty members of the military. Though Sandals and Beaches offered complimentary hospitality to returning members of the armed forces following the Persian Gulf War, OPERATION RELAX allowed the company to make a long-lasting contribution to the well-being of those who serve and protect.
Sandals Ochi Opens
Sandals created its newest and largest mega-resort with the $10 million renovation and merger of Sandals Ocho Rios Resort & Spa with the former Ciboney Resort across the road. The new Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Beach & Villa Resort was set on 110 acres, with 522 rooms, suites and villas, more than a hundred pools, 11 dining options, complimentary golf at the nearby Sandals Golf & Country Club, and two unique spas, the newly branded Red Lane® Spa.

Beaches became the first-ever resort company to forge a partnership with Sesame Street®, the celebrated children's program and educational workshop. Through this exclusive, multi-million dollar partnership, kids would be able to interact with Sesame Street® characters, including Elmo and many of his furry friends. The Caribbean Adventure with Sesame Street® featured character appearances, on-site events and activities, live stage shows, and even character breakfasts.
Red Lane® Spa
Already renowned for its luxurious European-style spas, Sandals created their own spa concept, the Red Lane® Spa. The introduction of this destination spa experience let guests relax and rejuvenate with treatments that combined the finest European traditions with a distinctive Caribbean flair. Massages, facials, and body scrubs were infused with natural Caribbean elements. Red Lane® Spa toiletries infused with lemongrass were soon found in all Sandals accommodations.

Its legendary luxury saw it selected as Jamaica's first ever member of The Leading Small Hotels of the World, a prestigious organization representing some of the world's finest, most luxurious hotels.

Sandals Whitehouse
Opens
Sandals ventured into the unchartered south coast region of Jamaica with the development of Sandals Whitehouse European Village & Spa. Set on a 500-acre nature preserve, this was Sandals most expensive resort to build. All 360 rooms were built to offer ocean views, spread over three distinctive European-style villages: Dutch, Italian, and French. A grand piazza hosts restaurants, bars, and Jamaica's largest zero-entry pool just steps from a two-mile stretch of unspoiled white-sand beach where guests enjoy views of both sunrise and sunset.
